To help children better regulate their emotions they need a lot of help from the adults in their lives.
The first step is to be informed of how a child develops, specifically the development of the brain.
Children are born with a well developed amygdala, the emotional powerhouse of the brain. This means their survival instincts are to the max but it also means tantrums are in abundance. Their decision making skill is typically dictated by their emotions. The prefrontal cortex where logical thought process and critical thinking takes place is not fully developed until they’re in their twenties.
This is why we say behind every bad behavior there is a good intention.
Just by knowing this little, but KEY, bit of information we as mentors can become more understanding and patient with our children.
Be proactive and not reactive.
We will be closed for classes Friday, July 1st in honour of Canada day. We will be open for classes on Saturday the 2nd though!

Throwback Thursday!
Throwback to one of our amazing parent night out events! look out for our next one coming up in July😉
Most traditional schools of martial arts would separate their classes based on rank. Here at Excel Martial Arts we take more of a child developmental approach and separate students by stages of development that includes all ranks.
In our early stages, a lot of our learning comes indirectly from an observational learning process. This is a type of social learning done using what is called the mirror neurons that allows children to see and gauge the consequences of an action before they begin to imitate it.
This is part of the reason why even though students’ ranks may differ, we will group them into similar stages of development. Students of lower ranks will observe their peers of a higher rank and mimic positively reinforced actions.
This effectively rewards the child for mimicking the positive actions of there higher up peers and also reinforces the higher peers in acting as a rodomel for others.
Determination means to push forward despite any obstacles.
Some things we can do as parents and mentors to help foster determination is by empowering our children to work through problems, teaching them about goal setting, and discussing/praising their effort.
Instead of spoon feeding our children, we ask them guiding questions that will help them identify the problem and think of ways to solve that problem. This is even if you can do it ten times faster. It shows them that you have confidence in them.
Teach them how to set big goals but also break them down into smaller goals so that it is easier to manage and they will feel good every time they hit a milestone. An example is doing 50 kicks without putting your foot down while having great technique. One the first few times you may start with 5, then 10, then 15, then 20. Overtime we develop the muscle strength and the coordination to go further.
You will often hear Mr.Clayton, Ms. Rebecca, Ms. Georgia, or Ms. Abby say, “I like that you guys showed great perseverance/determination and did not give up even though I know the exercise was really hard. You kept your head up and your kicks stayed high! Everyone put your hands up, pat your back, and say “I’m awesome!” 🙌
Children ages 3 & 4 are so much fun to teach! They are the embodiment of learning through play. Due to their limited vocabulary, you can't lecture or explain things to a 3 & 4-year-old child the same you would to a 5 to 6 or 7 to 9-year-old. So, why do some schools still teach that way? At Excel Martial Arts Port Coquitlam we choose to engage these children through play. They’re in the exploring stage and love to learn new things, so just by playing with them, we are teaching them how to interact with the world around them.
Getting your child started in one of our Excel Martial Arts age specific classes is as easy as setting an appointment for a free 1-on-1 session with one of our instructors.
Your child will learn some cool ninja moves while breaking the ice, you will see how we work with the kids, and we will be able to assess your child's strengths and challenges so we know how to best help them become the best versions of themselves physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially!
We all know that children have filter issues. Ever had a child call you out on things? “No that’s not how you do it!”
Children 7 through 9 are, socially, rule followers (sometimes only when convenient for them 😉 ) and so if their friends are cheating they’ll address it. This also makes them very competitive but it can also make them sensitive when losing or when things aren’t fair.
Our goal at Excel Martial Arts is to teach these ninjas how to win with humility and to lose with grace.

What a great school!
My son has been attending classes here since he was 3 1/2 years old. He has now been with the school for about almost a year and has done quite well in listening, working well in groups, and competitions. The instructors are very patient and great with working with students of all ages.
We totally recommend the school!
